How to find the right domain name

How to find the right domain name

by Sam Venator

The internet is a busy place, with hundreds of millions of websites cluttering the digital realm. Being able to accurately type your domain name is crucial to the success of your site. If you’re using slang, abbreviations, or words with multiple spellings this may make finding your site harder.

I can not stress enough how important it is to keep your domain name short and simple. With a long or complex domain name, your customers are more likely to make spelling mistakes and give up before they reach your site.

What do you do if your desired domain name is taken? Don’t panic, there are ways around this. Check to see if the domain you want is for sale. Godaddy offers a buying service. If the domain you would like is not available, you can also add a relevant adjective or noun to your desired domain name. For example: www.townhousemedia.com. But remember to keep it short and simple!

When choosing your domain name, it’s important to keep in mind your email address. This is where short and simple will be a big player. Missing out on a sale because your customer misspelled your email is not going to feel great.

Make sure you’re choosing the right extension for your domain name. Extensions are suffixes, such as, .com or .net, at the end of web addresses. Another option is to pick an extension but remember these extensions have specific meanings, selecting the right one is crucial. For example, if .com is taken, check to see if .ca is available to use. However, be cautious, someone could be using the extension .ca. You will need to check to ensure that your business is not in the same market. Be aware that you should watch for copyright and trademark infringements.

If you’re short on time or just unsure on what you’re doing, I would suggest you hire a professional branding and naming agency. (shameless plug) Like Aurakey Digital Agency where we do all the research and problem solving for you!
